** In 1639, representatives from Connecticut met to establish a government for the growing settlements. Tomas Hooker, known as The Father of the Constitution, drafted the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut, sometimes cited as the first democratic constitution written in America and one that greatly influenced the present day U.S. Constitution.
